NYC Helps with Hamlet of Arctic Bay Economic Development Plan
The meeting was one of many held over the past couple of weeks. The Hamlet of Arctic Bay is in the process of developing its 5 year Economic Development Plan. Nunavut Youth Consulting (NYC), one of the local non-profit youth groups in Arctic Bay has been helping out with this project. A survey of the community was completed and individual meetings were helped with community chairperson's, elected officials, business owners and community stakeholders. The community meeting was held to capture all of the communities views. A follow radio show was held as well. The youth ran the meetings, by modeled what they have been learning as members of NYC, for the entire community. Elder, Tommy Tatatuapik congratulated the youth for their hard work and requested copies of the meeting minutes so that he could take the information back to the Elders' committee. The Elders' committee is planning to take the same meeting format that the youth presented to model a similar goal setting meeting for their committee. The Hamlet of Arctic Bay is working on its 5 year Economic Development Plan and has enlisted the help of NYC and the entire community to make the plan work. The plan is taking a holist approach as it will include all aspects of community development. Comments and interview were taken from all sectors of the community- health, education, mental health, economic. The community is very excited about the opportunities that are available to them. The plans should be complete in late February. Once the plan is received the Community Economic Development Office and the Community Economic Development Committee will be working with the community to implement the plan. Training for the committee has already started. This is community development at its best as it shows how community capacity building of our youth is making a difference. It is also very empowering for the youth as they are the ones driving the changes within the community. With support from Elders and all community members this plan will change the community forever.
