Goal Setting

Key issues discussed:

1.           OLT Funding- Nunavut Youth Consulting through a proposal to the Nunavut CAP association has been given an On-Line Technology position. This is one position for 40 hours a week with a rate of pay at $10.00 an hour form September until March 31, 2005. Contracts will be issued yearly for the next three-year for this program. The person hired in the position has to be out of school and unemployed. Last year, we received the same type of funding and hired Rex Willie. Rex was approached about taking over the position again but is not interested as the position is in the evening. The contract for this will run until March 31, 2006. At that time the contract should be reviewed and renewed for the 2006-2007 fiscal year.

2.           Puzzle/Calendar Project- Literacy- Nunavut Youth Consulting through a proposal to CLEY has received funding to produce the 6 matching puzzles to the 12 of the Inuit Value Calendar. The values that have already been produced are: love, cooperation, oneness, respect, generosity and honesty.

The values that will be produced with this funding will be: sharing, family, mastery, trust, strength and volunteer.

The design and layout have been completed for the puzzles. Printing will start some time in October. The puzzles will be mailed out in a batch of 12 along with the matching calendar. The packages will be distributed to all of the Day Cares, Aboriginal Headstart Programs and Kindergarten classes across Nunavut. Nancy Karetak-Lindell’s office has generously volunteered to assist with the distribution of these.

3.           Traditional Name Placing- Literacy- Nunavut Arctic College, CLEY, Department of Education and Nunavut Youth Consulting have come together to work on the Arctic Bay Traditional Name Placing project. This project will involve hiring an expert in the field of mapping and having him come to work with the students of Nunavut Arctic College, Nunavut Youth Consulting and the Elders of Arctic Bay. The person being contracted to help with the project is Claudio Aparto. He is a professor at Carleton University. He has spent time doing research and working with Elders on similar projects in Igloolik. The intent of this year’s project is once again a part of the community’s literacy projects. The main objective is to finish the fourth phase of the project, which is to finalize the accuracy of the 10 topographical maps from around Arctic Bay. This project will be organized from September to December with the bulk of the work with the community in the beginning of 2006.

4.           CAP YI- Nunavut Youth Consulting through a proposal to the Nunavut CAP association has been given 2 CAP YI positions through the HRSDC Youth Skills Developments program. Each position is for 30 hours a week for a total of 420 hours with a rate of pay at $8.50 an hour. The youth will be hired to operate the CAP sites. We have made connection with the school and they are willing to use one of our CAP YI at the school as a computer resources person.  The contract for this will end on March 31, 2006.

5.           Artist Booklet- Literacy- The Artist’s Booklet is coming along slowly. The printer has most of the information but we still need a couple of artists interviewed and a few photos taken. This book needs to be completed. The Pre-Employment Program students will be assisting us with the proof reading, editing and layout process. We are hoping that he booklet will be complete for Christmas.

6.           Website Development and Updating- Literacy- Enunauvt will be coming to Arctic Bay to assist with the technical support and design of the website. Funding for this project is through Canadian Heritage. We will continue to collect information for the training. The new look of the website should be up on Friday September 9. The training will be from Saturday September 14-17. This training will allow us to change the website from our remote location.

7.           Dances- To assist with fundraising Nunavut Youth Consulting will start doing dances again. The money from this will go to help support the Nicaragua trip.

8.           Nicaragua Trip- Outreach- With Jeremy and Ron traveling down to Nicaragua in February 2005 the group is very excited about going down this February 2006. While in Ontario over the summer, Ron met with Missionary Ventures. Missionary Ventures is the group that we will be making the travel arrangements to Nicaragua with. They have people in Nicaragua already and will be able to ensure that our trip is safe. It will cost $5,000.00 per person to go. We are hoping to send 8 of our senior Nunavut Youth Consulting members so this will mean we need to fund raise over $40,000.00. Jeremy will be doing a write up of all that he experienced down in Nicaragua. All of the other members that will be traveling will be doing a write up of why they would like to go on the trip and what they hope to get out of it. The intent is to get this information up on the website and have people more informed about our trip. This will help with the fundraising.

9.           Goal Setting- A brainstorming session was held for the different goals that we would like to accomplish this year. The following was discussed:

Trip Across Canada- The senior Nunavut Youth Consulting members that will be graduating from grade 12 this year are planning to organize a trip across Canada. This trip is in the developmental stage and my include walking, biking, driving and taking the train.

WCSTC- During the summer months the bulk of the Nunavut Youth Consulting members plan to apply and work in Whitehorse with the cadets over the summer.

Careers- Discussion was held around careers, job and why we work.
