NYC CALENDAR
The production of this calendar was inspired by the youth of Nunavut Youth Consulting with the intention of the preservation of Inuit culture through education and health. Their many hours of volunteer work has made this project a realty. The Nunavut Youth Editorial Board provided their expertise in editing, design and layout. It is hoped that families, year after year to help reinforce the many Inuit values and beliefs, will use this calendar in the home.
Nunavut Youth Consulting, a Nunavut, non-profit, youth organization from Arctic Bay, has worked very hard over the past year on their Literacy Projects. In doing so they have continued to develop their Inuktitut and English skills. They have developed more self-esteem and have learned valuable skills that will assist them for the rest of their lives. With the assistance of the Nunavut Youth Editorial Board, our members have gained valuable editing and proof reading skills. They have been able to give and accept constructive criticism while realizing that their opinions matter. The most promising part of the project is the fact that the products produced have brought the youth knowledge and learning through their production and now that they are complete they will continue to bring knowledge and learning to the end user as they are distributed across Nunavut.
We have been blessed over the past year with many people and organizations that have been willing to assist us with our growth and development. The Government of Nunavut Department of Education allowed us the use of the Inuit Values and Beliefs.
We would like to say a special thanks to the Government of Nunavut Department of Culture, Language, Elder's and Youth and Canadian Heritage for their generous financial assistance. Funding was made possible for this project under the Canada-Nunavut Inuktitut Language Grants. We couldn't have done it without them.
This fiscal year thanks to a grant from the Government of Nunavut Department of Education, we have obtained funding to publish 6 more of the Inuit Values and Beliefs puzzles. These puzzles match the 12 values of the Inuit Values and Beliefs calendar produced by NYC. The calendar is a perpetuating calendar and we hoped that by producing it in this way that people would write birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions on it and use it year after year to continue to promote the values.
The entire project has been about showcasing the Inuit values and beliefs. This project has been entered with the intention to use the values with a spirit of sharing, generosity and team work. It is for this reason we are giving these puzzles to be shared freely.
NYC loves learning experiences like this. The creation of the puzzles, as part of our literacy project for NYC, has been very rewarding. There has been so much learning on so many levels. Here we have learned so much and have gained valuable experience and now to see the puzzles sent out across Nunavut and continue to see the learning going on this is very rewarding. We call it "Literacy with Meaning" and strongly feel that is why all of our programs are so successful.
Enjoy your learning experience! With complements on behalf of NYC. If you click on the Calendar navigation bar you will be able to download and print the calendar as a PDF.
