NYC PUZZLES
(NYC) has distributed 1 copy of each puzzle to all day care, Aboriginal Head Start Programs and Kindergarten class in Nunavut. The Department of Education in Arviat in conjunction with the Department of Health and Social Services created a list of 32 Inuit Values and Beliefs based on the 6 guiding principles of IQ. All of these values were created with the input of Elders from across Nunavut. The values were matched up with drawings and then placed on a CD ROM. This CD ROM was distributed around Nunavut but not many people know of its existence. The Elders involved in the project were very concerned that their work did not seem to be able to get from their production stage into the hands of children. Like the Elders, Nunavut Youth Consulting had the same concern that the values and drawings have not been getting into the communities and into the hands of the people that need them. We felt that young children needed to be able to experience these values while at the same time we hoped that parents would get involved in working with their children to share these values. That is why the puzzle idea seemed to be the best choice. There was a lot of thought and care put into the decision as to what values should be produced first. We had many meetings to discuss and choose which six values we would start with. "Honest" was our number one value chosen for production and this was their first puzzle produced. We have been blessed with this project as so many different organizations have helped with distribution and production. We have had assistance from the Government of Nunavut, Department of Culture, Language, Elders and Youth, Canadian Heritage, Nancy Karetak-Lindell's office and Nunavut Arctic College.
